Economic Stimulus Package - Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Veterans who received disability compensation, pensions or survivors’ benefits from VA last year may be entitled to an economic stimulus payment of at least $300. To qualify, veterans must file a tax return for 2007, even if they aren’t normally required to file. The economic stimulus benefits have a special provision for low–income veterans. (more)

The LeBron James Family Foundation Bike-A-Thon - Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Registration Deadline is May 30th.

The LeBron James Family Foundation, that sponsors Bike-A-Thon, will be showcasing this event on June 21st at 9:15am.  The Foundation is asking the veterans of Summit County to participate by coming to downtown Akron at E. Exchange & 300 S. Main Street, in front of the Akron Aeros Ball Park.

VA Announces $4.7 Million to Help Caregivers - Wednesday, February 13, 2008

WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) today announced it will provide nearly $4.7 million for “caregiver assistance pilot programs” to expand and improve health care education and provide needed training and resources for caregivers who assist disabled and aging veterans in their homes.

How to help individuals at risk for suicide - Wednesday, February 13, 2008

Suicide is the 11th most frequent cause of death in the US:  someone dies from suicide every 16 minutes.  Suicidal ideas and attempts to harm oneself are the result of problems that may seem like they can't be fixed. Together, Vet Centers and VA Medical Centers stand ready to reach out and help veterans at risk for suicide.

Fraud against Seniors - Wednesday, February 13, 2008
Seniors can make easy targets for fraud, whether it’s for unbelievable investment returns or fraudulent sweepstakes prizes. Fraud on seniors can happen by phone, mail, in person, or, less commonly, the Internet (because seniors are online in smaller numbers). It can happen to wealthy seniors, and those of limited means. According to the Federal Trade Commission, studies show con artists are more likely to target senior citizens than other age groups because they believe seniors are more susceptible to such scams. The FTC reports that fraudulent telemarketers direct from 56 to 80 percent of their calls at seniors.                  read more ...

VHA Home Based Primary Care Program - Wednesday, February 13, 2008
Independent studies show that patients in the VA health care system receive better care than private sector patients.  These studies also indicate that VA inpatients and outpatients are happier with the care they receive than those patients in the private sector.  Much of the success of the VHA inpatient/outpatient care is be attributable to the dedicated professionals of the VHA’s Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC) program.             read more ...
