It may be possible to receive up to $1,000.00 in assistance with the final expenses (funeral/burial) of a veteran and his/her dependent, which are considered indigent. Indigent means that their are no funds or assets to cover the cost of the final expenses.
The indigent burial fund is a Summit County Veterans Service Commission program. It is very important to understand that the burial fund is not a reimbursement program. The application for such assistance must be the person responsible for the payment of the final expenses. The applicant's ability to pay the final expenses will also be considered when determining eligibility. The application for assistance must also be made within a reasonable time frame from the date of death of the veteran or his/her dependant, normally within 30 days.
If the deceased veteran was a Summit County Resident and you need to make applications for this benefit, please bring the veterans' discharge or DD-214, the death certificate and the funeral/burial invoice. Giving every veteran honor and dignity with their final resting is the highest priority of the Veterans Service Commission.
Please contact our office to schedule an appointment if you are interested in filing for this assistance
