AKC Canine Good Citizen Training

What is it?

This is an 8 week course that will cover the principles of the American Kennel Club Good Citizen test. This is a 10-step, non-competitive test evaluating basic manners and responsible pet ownership for all dog breeds. It serves as a benchmark for polite behavior in public and is a prerequisite for therapy dog training. Passing requires passing all 10 tests, including staying calm around strangers, grooming, and obedience

  • Sitting Politely for Petting by a stranger

  • Appearance and Grooming by a stranger

  • Out for a Walk: Handler demonstrates control while walking on a loose leash

  • Walking Through a Crowd

  • Sit, Down, and Stay

  • Coming When Called

  • Reaction to Another Dog: Dog/handler walk past another dog/handler, behaving politely.

  • Reaction to Distraction: Dog must not panic at sudden noises or passing distractions..

  • Supervised Separation: Dog stays calm for 3 minutes while the handler is out of sight.

Who is welcome to attend?

The program and participation start with a veteran or widow of a veteran. Immediate family of the veteran living in the household are welcome (as long as they are participating in the dog training and not disruptive to the class). Also, caregivers of disabled veterans. Exceptions will be made at the trainers discretion. If you are unsure, please ask.

How many dogs may i bring?

Each registration must consist of the canine and the dedicated handler. Additional pets with a dedicated handler will be allowed if space is available or at the trainers discretion

What is required of me and my canine?

  • All dogs must be current on shots and vaccinations – Proof will be requested at first training.
  • Leash (Simple), collar or vest, training treats and muzzle (if needed). All dogs temperaments are different.
  • Homework: Each session will include training and reinforcement that needs completed throughout the week
  • Attendance: Please review your calendars for the next 8 weeks. We understand things happen. If you need to miss two or more sessions, please notify the trainer and schedule for the next session.
  • Release of liability to the Veterans Service Commission and Cor Canis.
